Unguarded strengths are double weaknesses (Part 1)

I have often thought about the meaning behind the saying that an unguarded strength is a double weakness. Frequently we pray about something and when God answers us, we immediately start implementing what we have prayed about, sometimes continuing over many months or even years, without even asking God what He had in mind now that He gave the go-ahead. I’d like to share with you two specific incidents that made me understand more clearly the meaning of the above.

Miracle One: The Lord provides an unexpected gift

In December 1988, our family went on vacation to one of the most beautiful spots in the world, a fishing village called Hermanus, located between mountains and the sea, approximately one and a half hours’ drive from Cape Town. Though 1,000 miles away from Pretoria, we managed to get there in one day.

Along with some friends, we rented a holiday home in Vermont, approximately four miles to the west of Hermanus. Anita and I thought it would be a privilege to have a holiday home in the Cape in order to enjoy the warm summer days and cool Atlantic sea breeze at night. Trusting God in Business Deals

“If you want favor with both God and man, and a reputation for good judgment and common sense, then trust the Lord completely; don’t ever trust yourself. In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.” (Proverbs 3:4–6)

Yet, God remained faithful as I continued to seek His will.

Let your requests be made known!

Last week I talked about how as a new believer I was encouraged and amazed at how the Lord responded to a simple request. The story continues

Soon after this incident, I made another request known to the Lord. We were urgently seeking a pharmacist for one of our pharmacies. During my quiet time one morning, I asked the Lord to please send me a pharmacist. I added that it was an emergency and that I needed to find a manager before twelve noon!

Hearing God Speak Through Daily Times in His Word

As a new believer, I was encouraged by my pastor to “delve into the Word”. I took this to heart and rose at five every morning to pray and read the Bible. I met a friend at one of the Saturday prayer meetings and we started comparing notes on what we felt the Lord was telling us in our quiet time. It was amazing how often the messages were similar, even though we read from different parts of the Bible. This greatly encouraged us, as the Bible became more meaningful. I marveled at the way in which the Holy Spirit started revealing the Word to me.
